Meeting jargon? AITop's AI glossary explains it in plain English.
They look similar — a prompt, an answer, some links — but they are three different businesses. Perplexity sells you citations: every claim is footnote-linked, and that is what the $20 buys. Google AI Mode is free because it is ad-subsidised and sits directly on Google's own index, so it is the fastest for anything the open web covers and the least neutral for commercial queries. ChatGPT Search is a chatbot that can look things up — best when your question is really a task. For pure verification, Perplexity. For everything, AI Mode. For doing, ChatGPT.

What the landing pages won't tell you
Citations are the product and the reason to pay — but "average use" is the only quota your $20 buys, and heavy agent users get nudged toward the $200 Max tier fast.
It is free because it is advertising. Ad slots appear on AI Mode answers and cluster where the money is: queries with a cost-per-click above $10 show ads about 54% of the time, versus 24% for low-value queries. The answer is only as neutral as the auction behind it.
Answers can now be gamed. Agencies sell "AI search optimisation" that plants fake authority reports and expert quotes so models cite a brand. What looks like the model's opinion may be a paid placement — check whether the cited source is real.
The verdict
Pick by the job, not the interface. If your week is verification — diligence, literature, teardowns, anything you will repeat in public — Perplexity Pro pays for itself because the citations are clickable. If you want a fast, free default that lives where you already search, Google AI Mode wins on freshness and reaches the whole open web, as long as you remember the ads ride along. If your "search" is really the first step of a task — research then draft, find then act — ChatGPT is the one that follows through, and search is just a tool it holds. Most heavy users end up with AI Mode as the default and one paid subscription on top; pick Perplexity if you verify, ChatGPT if you produce.
Straight answers
Is Google AI Mode free?
Yes — it runs inside Google Search at no cost, and Google monetises it with advertising. Ads appear on AI Mode answers, and they cluster on high-commercial-intent queries: research cited for 2026 shows queries with a cost-per-click above $10 show ads about 54% of the time, versus 24% for low-value queries. You pay with attention, not a subscription.
Do I still need Perplexity if I have Google AI Mode?
Only if verification matters to you. AI Mode is faster and free; Perplexity's edge is that every claim is footnoted to a clickable source by default. If you repeat facts in public or need to show your working, that difference is worth the $20 a month.
Can AI search answers be manipulated?
Yes. Agencies now sell "AI search optimisation" that plants fabricated authority reports, fake expert quotes and bulk content so models cite a chosen brand. Testing has shown that flooding platforms with content about an invented brand can get it recommended. Treat a cited source as a claim to check unless you recognise the domain.
Which is best for research reports?
Perplexity's Deep Research and Labs produce cited multi-source reports closest to analyst work, and its Sonar API lets you wire it into your own tools. AI Mode is fine for quick factual lookups but has no public answer API, and ChatGPT's Deep Research is limited on the Plus tier.
