Perplexity vs ChatGPT: do you verify things or make things?

Data last updated: 2026-10-05. Pricing may have changed — verify with the vendor.

The 30-second answer

Perplexity is how you find out; ChatGPT is what you do with it. Researchers live in Perplexity, builders live in ChatGPT — and at $20 each, plenty of people honestly pay for both.

What the landing pages won't tell you

Perplexity

Citations are the product — the reason to pay. But "average use" is the only quota your $20 buys, and heavy agent users get nudged toward the $200 Max tier fast.

ChatGPT

It will answer anything confidently, which is exactly the problem. For facts you'll repeat in public, you want links you can click.

Both

At $20 each they cost the same. The question is whether your week is more "verify this" (Perplexity) or "make this" (ChatGPT).

The verdict

Buy Perplexity Pro if your week is research: vendor comparisons, diligence, literature, competitor teardowns — the citations pay for themselves. Buy ChatGPT Plus if your week is production: code, decks, drafts, agents. One subscription only? Decide whether you read more or write more. Both? That's $40 a month and, for knowledge workers, an honest answer rather than an upsell.

Straight answers

Could Perplexity replace Google for me?

For factual lookup and research, mostly yes — the cited answers beat ten blue links for most questions. For local maps, shopping and everything Google owns the data for, no. It's a research engine, not a lifestyle.

Can ChatGPT search the web too?

Yes, and it cites sources when you ask. But search is bolted onto a chatbot; in Perplexity the entire interface is built around sourcing. If you check claims for a living, that difference is the product.

Is Perplexity Max worth it?

Not for most people. It's 10x the price of Pro, and it only earns its keep if you run agentic Computer workflows at volume. Power-user forums are full of Max trials that quietly downgraded back to Pro.

What's the deal with the Comet browser?

Perplexity's agentic browser went free on every platform in March 2026 — it browses, summarizes and fills forms for you. The free tier is genuinely usable, which makes it the cheapest way to try agentic browsing before paying anyone anything.
