ChatGPT vs Gemini: the ecosystem decides, not the model

The 30-second answer

Live in Gmail and Docs, or want video? Gemini. Code, agents, or a mixed Microsoft stack? ChatGPT. At the $20 mid-tier the models are close enough that your app ecosystem — not the benchmark charts — makes the call.

Strengths
  • Best all-round quality; Codex and Work agents on every paid plan
  • Huge third-party ecosystem: Slack, Teams, Excel, Drive connectors
  • Image generation included on every plan
  • Deepest integration: Gmail, Docs, Drive, Android, Chrome
  • Most generous free tier: Deep Research, Live, image editing
  • Native video (Veo 3.1 + Flow) — now the only big-two option
Weaknesses
  • Sora video discontinued (app Apr 2026, API Sept 2026)
  • Plan ladder now five rungs and counting
  • Consumer chats train models by default (opt out in settings)
  • Free tier's 32K context cap bites on long documents
  • Best agent (Spark) is Ultra-only
  • "AI Pro" vs "Pro" naming collides with ChatGPT's tiers

What the landing pages won't tell you

ChatGPT

The plan ladder went from two rungs to five in a year — Go, Plus, and Pro at $100/$200/$500. Decide what you need before OpenAI's pricing page does it for you.

Gemini

The free tier hands you all three Gemini 3 models — then caps context at 32K tokens. Long documents are where the generosity quietly ends.

Both

"Pro" means $20/mo on Gemini and $100+/mo on ChatGPT. Half the confusion in every comparison of these two is the same word for different price points.

The verdict

Pick Gemini if your work lives in Gmail, Docs and Drive — the in-app integration is worth more than any benchmark delta — or if you need video, which after Sora's shutdown only Google ships. Pick ChatGPT for coding (Codex), cross-app agents, and a mixed Microsoft/SaaS stack. Both free tiers are genuinely usable; both consumer plans train on your chats by default, so use business tiers for company data.

Straight answers

Which is better for coding?

ChatGPT. Codex gets OpenAI's new models first and works across desktop, cloud and mobile. Gemini counters with 1M-token context for whole-repo questions and the Jules coding agent, but the developer gravity is with OpenAI.

Which free plan should I use?

Gemini's free tier has more features (Deep Research, voice, image editing); ChatGPT's has unlimited basic chat. Use both for a week — the one you open without thinking is your answer.

Can either generate video now?

Only Gemini (Veo 3.1 and Flow). OpenAI discontinued the standalone Sora app in April 2026 and shut its API in September. If video matters, this row decides the comparison.

Is my data safe on the free plans?

Neither consumer plan is private by default: OpenAI and Google both use consumer chats to improve their models unless you opt out. For company data, pay for a business tier and read its data terms before uploading anything sensitive.
